Do you have a child between the ages of 3 and 12?

Has he or she been prescribed an antibiotic in the last 24 hours?

If so, your child may be eligible for the PLAY ON Study (Probiotics: Live and Active Yogurt Cultures for Healthy Children ON Antibiotics), an exciting clinical trial sponsored by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health, and conducted by the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University.

If your child is eligible, we will provide you with a 10-day supply of a strawberry-flavored yogurt drink. Your child will be randomly assigned to receive either a strawberry yogurt with the active-culture probiotic BB-12, or a regular strawberry yogurt without BB-12. Each participant will consume 4 ounces of the yogurt daily.

You will receive up to $125 plus $25 in toys for your and your child's participation.

No travel is required -- we can come to you.

Around 15-25% of children experience diarrhea when taking antibiotics. Probiotics, often known as “good bacteria,” may be able to help.

The PLAY ON Study wants to see if a strawberry yogurt smoothie with the probiotic BB-12 helps prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, or AAD. We get this great tasting yogurt from the Berkey Creamery at Penn State. Our team is partnering with the University of Maryland to take a closer look at how antibiotics and probiotics affect your child's gut microbiome. You may have read or heard about the microbiome in the news before, as scientists believe it is related to many aspects of health.

At the end of the study, you may choose to receive our reports describing your child’s gut microbiome before and after taking the yogurt and antibiotic.
